Join us for the EMANCIPATION CELEBRATIONS 2007, a feast of entertainment and enlightenment, featuring artistes, scholars and entrepreneurs from the Pan African World.

The Lidj Yasu Omowale Emancipation Village opens on July 27, following the Blessing of the grounds on 22 July and an International Forum on Africa and its Diaspora on July 30, 2007 The Emancipation Village features:

  • Trans-Atlantic Expo 2007 July 27 - August 1, an International Market and Trade Exposition
  • Daily and Nightly events and activities, including fabulous entertainment featuring top local and international artistes, videos, seminars, workshops (some specially designed for children), educational and art exhibitions, a Youth Day, organized and managed by youth;
  • A Food Fair on July 29, which provides African cuisine from the continent and the diaspora
  • Kambule 2007 - a street parade - on August 1, Emancipation Day, which moves through the streets of Port of Spain and ends at the Emancipation Village for the grand celebration
  • A flambeau light procession which leaves the Emancipation Village at the close of the Emancipation Day celebrations and proceeds to a ceremonial ending at the All Stars Panyard, site of a revolt against colonial oppression in the 1880's.
  • The opening of the Lidj Yasu Omowale Emancipation Village is preceded by the Kwame Ture Memorial Lecture Series which begins on June 10th 2007 at the Relevant Theatre [formerly] Strand Cinema]
  • On July 31 business executives and analysts from the pan-African world, representatives of regional and multinational institutions, scholars and government officials will meet at a one-day Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Symposium
